“Green” Oak Don’t Split

My in-laws had several oak trees cut down in their yard last week. I spent yesterday afternoon bringing several pickup-truck loads of the resulting logs up to our house about 45 minutes away.  Some of these trees were about 2+ feet in diameter.  That make for rather heavy logs when they’re about 18 inches long.  I loaded a bunch of these myself, but just could not get the bigger ones into the truck by myself.  Those suckers are heavy!

So, I decided to try to split some of the larger ones in half to make them easier to load. So, I set one log on its end and started swinging the splitting maul. When I struck the rather large log several times with the maul, the maul just bounced off harmlessly.  What appeared to be a small crack that formed on the first swing was actually just a smirk.  The log was laughing at me.  So, scrap that idea.  I guess you can’t really split oak - or other wood for that matter - when it’s still “green”.

Wait, what trees did they cut down?

Several - but not all - in the front yard (including the birch) and one or two out back.
